George Michael Dies

The originator of highlights odd and exhilarating has died. George Michael, long time Washington-area sports caster and the creator of the George Michael Sports Machine passed away today at the age of 70.

He was a proponent of all things local sports; not an easy task given the rampant mediocrity of most teams over the last 15 years. His work on Channel 4 many of us grew up on in the DMV, but he is internationally known as the man who pioneered the format that ESPN  uses today for highlights and feature packages.

Like this one on Steve McNair and Jay Walker.

When people die and folks say they will remember them, it’s often a definitive effort to recall the things that they loved about the deceased. George Michael changed sports, and even in his death, every highlight will echo with his influence.

The machine will keep on rolling.
