Derrick Mason Retires?

Just when you thought it was safe to think about something football-related apart from Steve McNair, the Ravens community get another punch in the mouth.

Derrick Mason, the team’s most reliable receiver over his four-year tenure in Baltimore, is retiring.

Say it ain’t so, Derrick. Mark Clayton is there, Demetrius Williams is supposed to be around, but he’s chronically injured. With Year Two of Joe Flacco at quarterback, you have to wonder if this sets back the transition of the Ravens being a defense-heavy squad to being a balanced competitor in the AFC.

Aside from that, Derrick Mason’s retirement marks the end of a tough-molded career of consistency and class. Mason came to Baltimore after a stellar career with the Tennessee Titans, and immediately became the best of the Ravens offense throughout his time in Charm City.

Mason, if he is indeed done, will finish his career in the top 30 all-time in career receiving yards and receptions…. Yeah, it’s going to hurt as bad as you think it will come this pre-season when you realize it’s Clayton at number one and question marks at split end and slot receiver in the pass-happy Cam Cameron offense.

Come on back, 85. Please.
