Greivis Vasquez Staying or Going?

Maryland guard and locally-renowned swag star Greivis Vasquez has until 5:00 p.m. today to decide if he will enter the 2009 NBA Draft.

Greivis may be excitable, but he’s not stupid. The last thing you want as a player with the kind of versatility and size that Vasquez has is to be relegated to extensive tours in the D-League just because most scouts and executives think he should’ve stayed in school. It’s often not about talent as much as it is perspective, and Vasquez just hasn’t wowed the scouts into believing him to be a future part of any regular NBA rotation.

He will return to College Park to position himself to be the ACC Player of the Year, win the ACC Championship, and will himself into the lottery.

UPDATEOf course he’s staying.

Great blog! Been reading for a couple on months now. Figured it was time to add my two cents the the discussion:

Why would Greivis come back. The Maryland program is in abysmal shape. Gary has delivered no help for Grievis. His best bet is to get into a NBA camp and attempt to prove what he can do. Your point is well taken about perspective over talent, but I do think that if he gets into a camp and prove that he can play PG at the NBA level he’ll stick.

But if I were him I’d stay as far away from Gary as possible. He is single handedly ruining what should be, perennially, the most talent laden team in the country. I say Gary needs to step down and allow the hiring of Todd Bozeman.

Now wait a minute, my man. Bozeman going to Maryland would mean him leaving my alma mater, and that’s something we just can’t let happen.

Besides, Maryland is still smarting from the Bob Wade years, and that’s part of the reason why Maryland is not consistently competitive. Gary Williams can’t pay his players (at least, he can’t pay enough to get the really good ones), so he has to make do with those that are genuinely willing to come to College Park.

    JC,

For you statement about Gary not paying players to make sense, then you would have to be saying that Duke, NC, and every other institution besides MD pays players. Top notch players are “genuinely” willing to go to every other major university except for MD. Come on man!!!! You know Gary is lazy and resting on his laurels.

Bozeman is the perfect replacement. He can actually recruit the area and he’s an excellent coach. Morgan may be you alma mater but you never thought that Bozman would be there longer than a reputation rebuild did you?
