What’s Next For Troy Smith?

The world may never know what would’ve been of Troy Smith. Last year, Kyle Boller was injured and maligned, Joe Flacco was newly drafted and unready for the pressures NFL stardom, and Troy Smith was the second-year player with a Heisman Trophy and some manageable expectations from Ravens faithful.

Then he got sick, Flacco stepped in and the rest is rookie history.

This year, he’s the clear number two guy behind Flacco… Or is he? Right Off Russell has a perspective on Smith’s chances with Cameron and the Ravens bringing in a former Miami Dolphin under Cameron, John Beck.

Beck is a Cam Cameron guy from Cam’s short-lived Dolphins days. He has some game experience and possible pro potential. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him step into the number 2 spot.  Does this free Troy Smith to become more a slash player? or is Troy Smith flat  out better than this dude?

I don’t think Smith is terrible; he’s just really, really short to play behind such a huge Ravens offensive line. And if there’s anything that would bump him down on the depth chart, and based on the spot duty he had last season, there’s very little that can do that, it would be because Smith’s size puts him in a position to make slower decisions than a quarterback who can read the field and the play a little faster because he can see over his linemen.

Not a knock on Smith, not a prediction, not a fact. Just an opinion that might shape the way camp goes in a few months.
