Greivis Vasquez Declares for NBA Draft
There’s still time to figure out if you care about Greivis Vasquez declaring for the NBA Draft, but its nothing that he wasn’t saying since the beginning of the season. He won’t hire an agent, leaving open the possibility for a run at ACC Player of the Year next season and a much higher stock in the Draft lottery.
Interestingly enough, Vasquez won’t entertain the possibility of playing in Europe, which is surprising because nowadays, you can likely make more money and position yourself for a higher NBA payday if you do join the overseas pro ranks. (See Sarunas Jasikevicius). After all, I don’t much physical difference between Vasquez and Spanish phenom Ricky Rubio, but Rubio’s is solid to go at least in the top three.
The General has a lot going for him with this move; he’s an interchangeable guard with size, can shoot from most sports on the floor, and can seduce you into thinking he can’t go off the dribble. The bad news? Can anyone really ever say Greivis has changed a game with his defense? And sure that’s petty as he tries to enter a league with no defense at all, but it will also be the kind of thing that will sink him from mid-first round to high-second round status.
Rather than see Greivis go the route of Terence Morris, I’d rather see him go all in and play his way into someone’s rotation. There’s nothing left for him to prove in College Park, and the only thing he could do to improve his stock as is currently rated is to be an all-American, and the Terps just don’t have the supporting cast for that to happen.
I’ll miss the General; because ACC basketball on Saturday afternoon’s just won’t be the same without the chest-pounding, red-faced grimacing of one of Maryland’s most interesting- and talented – players in the last 15 years.

I really think G is coming back. In all the projections I’ve seen, he’s a mid 2nd rounder, and I think he knows that because he didn’t sign an agent. Especially if Lance Stephenson gives us a surprise and signs with the Terps, Vasquez has a lot to say for. He can’t play defense, and is not used to being a side show on a team, 2 things NBA scouts wouldn’t like. I think this is just one of those things that he naturally does because he’s incredibly cocky and likes to do what he wants. He’ll get some sense talked into him.
