Nobody Buys Out Gary Williams

Everybody knows that I love Gary Williams, I just can’t stand his stubbornness when it comes to recruiting. And while many fans and possibly the UMD athletic brass agree with this sentiment, there’s nothing either group is going to be able to do about it.

All appears well between Gary Williams and the athletic department, and it will likely be that way until he’s ready to roll. Two UMD graduates, intimately connected with prominent boosters and healthy donors in their own right, disclosed to the SSB that attempts have been made in the past to buy out Gary’s contract.

The key word is attempts, because appeals made from the UMD athletic department to donors asking them to chip into a fund to buy Williams out were often met with consternation – and some instances of outright threats to cut donations to the program.

I’ve said it before – Gary may not be able to talk to student-athletes, their parents or coaches, but he can certainly speak the language of the College Park upper crust. Maryland is really lucky that Gary is a more-than-decent coach, because he makes up for a lack of talent with strategy acumen and keen motivational tactics with his players.

But if Maryland goes through one more stretch of underachievement in-and-out-of-conference, and if the under perform without horses in the stable, some of these hesitant booster may be bolstered to change their stance on saving Garyland.
