Ray Lewis: “Stay Out of Me and God’s Business”

Ray Lewis is the most famous man in Maryland right now. Legions of fans in Baltimore want him to stay, Redskins fans are probably praying he leaves just to laugh about it, and secretly hope that Daniel Snyder pulls out his checkbook.

People around Ray Lewis are talking about his pending free agency, from teammates to commentators.

So what does Ray Lewis have to say about it?

“What I’m thinking, nobody needs to know,” said Lewis, who was at the Super Bowl promoting Xbox 360 and the Madden Bowl. “I’ve given my prayers to God. It’s between me and him. It’s nobody else’s business. That’s between me and God.”

Don’t you just hate when the Lord isn’t ready to give you what you want? At least the beauty of it is, the Lord’s time is always the right time. And in Ray Lewis’ case, the Lord’s time happens to coincide with his agent’s time to gauge what other offers might be out there.

The smart money is that Ray Lewis could make a lot more of it on another team. Everyone knows that, and outside of Baltimore, would generally accept that premise. But the sure money is in not tipping your hand one way or another to the public, ownership or media. The less of a story this is from Lewis’ mouth, the less of a shock it will be no matter which direction he decides to pursue.

Both sides are playing this game to perfection. The team and the city are making him feel wanted, and the superstar is playing coy. It has all the makings of Ray Lewis inking his deal in Owings Mills with Issac Hayes’ rendition of “Never Can Say Goodbye” playing softly in the background.

And all we have to do is watch. And pray.
