Orioles Sign Zaun, Delay The Start of the Matt Wieters Era

Gregg Zaun seemed to be the free agent the Baltimore Orioles wanted most this off-season, and we’ll be darned if they didn’t get their man. The good news is that they found a catcher to replace the traded Ramon Hernandez. The bad news is that they already had someone in Matt Wieters.

The worst news is that Zaun was about as coveted a free agent by Baltimore fans as Clay Davis.

What was the fuss about this guy? That he began his career here, or that the O’s knew they could get him for the low? He hit .231 and six homers for the Toronto Blue Jays last year, so it’s not like there’s a big bat coming to the lineup.

And how long is Matt Wieters supposed to wait? All he did last year was bat .355 and slug .600 between Single and Double-A ball. All Zaun did of note was get tagged out on a steal attempt with a glove to the groin.

What exactly are the Orioles doing to get better?

  1. Love that Clay Davis reference.

For some reason, when I hear the name ‘Greg Vaughn,’ I think ‘Ricky Vaughn’…..it’d be awesome if the O’s signed that guy, maybe Jake Taylor too…it might make me a fan of them again.

The Wild Thing might be a welcome addition to this rotation. As would Willie Mays Hayes.
