It’s Been A While Since We Laughed at Terps Basketball

And with good reason. They’ve made short work of mid-major opponents at home, and they’ve risen to the level of higher competition. While yesterday’s win over visiting Charlotte was not recent to book plane tickets for the Final Four, you can count on a few more wins from Gary Williams and this season’s Maryland Terrapins squad than you have in past years.

Quietly, Greivis Vazquez is having a first-team all-ACC caliber year. The General is pulling off the rare quadruple-crown for the Terps, leading Maryland in scoring, rebounding, assists and swag. And for as much heat as Gary Williams catches for his less-than-adequate recruiting, freshman Sean Mosley out of Baltimore has proven that not high school ballers in the state that have talent suddenly lose it at College Park.

Mosely had his best game of the season yesterday, scoring 11 points that included two critical three pointers in the second half. He also had a handful of rebounds and showed flashes of Juan Dixon in his perimeter defense.

So the Terps aren’t bad. Conference play will determine if we should call them good or not, but for now, 2009 appears to be the year for college basketball to at least Acknowledge the Turtle.
