If Redskins Fans Watched Hockey…
.. .then its possible Alex Ovechkin would not have been snubbed in the NHL All-Star Game fan voting. If they had the same passion in voting for the local hockey star as they had for rigging the NFL Pro Bowl nominations, then Washington Capitals fans wouldn’t have to bear watching Sidney Crosby lead the league in votes and Alex Ovechkin not starting the game.
“It’s dumb,” Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said before Washington hosted the New York Rangers on Saturday night.
“It’s not right the best player in the game is not a starter,” Boudreau said. “But it is what it is. We want to get the fans involved, and they’ve got the right to vote for whoever they want.”
Dumb is one way to put it, allergic to common sense would be another. But what responsibility do Caps fans hold in this debacle? Did they think his being named a starter was that automatic that everyone else would have seen the light? If Pittsburgh Penguins fans can get this amped for their guy, why can’t the Red Faithful?
Maybe if it isn’t Gilbert Arenas lobbying for a spot, or the Redskins franchise lobbying fans to doctor the fan voting system, it just isn’t worth it to area hockey fans. Perhaps hockey just isn’t that popular, or just isn’t marketed well enough for casual observers to be moved to their keyboards and text devices to vote.
The saddest part of this is that fans in the area won’t draw the parallel between Ovechkin not being named an All-Star starter to Clinton Portis not making the Pro Bowl or Antawn Jamison not making the NBA All-Star Game.
He’ll be a participant, but won’t be the headliner that he deserves to be.

I guess putting ballots in Hair Cutterys was out of the question.
Perhaps if Leonsis was like Snyder, and used his money like Lex Luthor, the fans would have been aware that this needed to happen.
Instead, he trusted us to do right, and we failed.
