All Aboard the Purple Express, Redskins Fans

I know that you hate us, and there’s no way I can convince you to do otherwise. But if you think about it, the Baltimore Ravens are your best chance at peace with the remainder of the football season.

You could stay in the NFC and root for either the Philadelphia Eagles or the Arizona Cardinals, but what joy would you truly get out of either? The Eagles have one of the most annoying fan bases in all of professional sports. More annoying than any ill feelings you may have against purple camo. Is it really so serious to root for a team that tied the Cincinnati Bengals because you don’t like purple camo?

Obviously, your hatred for Baltimore and its fans runs deeper than that, and chances are, you won’t root for the Eagles. But why sell yourselves short by pulling for the Cardinals? They haven’t been here in like 60-plus years. You beat them during the regular season. Most of all, you would rather watch the Eagles in the title game against either of the two remaining AFC teams than a squad that you KNOW will get smoked.

Which brings us to the Pittsburgh Steelers, whom we know that you secretly love since you don’t mind their fans taking over your stadium. The Redskins went 1-3 against the AFC North this year, and Pittsburgh gave the Skins the most convincing defeat out of the bunch. You can hate Ray Lewis and call him a criminal, you can despise the city, you can detest the colors and disregard any hint at a rivalry.

But you can’t deny the fact that Steeler fans are collectively much more loyal than Redskins fans will ever be. And that burns you up. Your team was unable to do anything about it, so why not get behind a force that can?

No one is asking you to take your allegiance up 295. We much more enjoy you guys wearing “Portis Pockets Straight” gear than “Joe The Quarterback” tees. But for the sake of enjoying the conference championships and Super Bowl, you would be much better suited rooting for your neighbor than either one of your enemies. It’s going to be a huge game and we’d much rather have the swag of an entire region pushing the team towards the goal, then a few million Washington Redskins faithful sitting around grumbling about how overrated they think the Ravens are.

There’s very few choices here, and only one right one. Show a little love to the Baltimore Ravens. If not for our benefit, than for your football-consuming sensitivities.

  1. See….B-More is a like a fairly cool step brother, so I’m down with rooting for them. Oh yea, also H8 the Steelers.

  2. Sean says:

Is the Purple team really so desperate for support that they’ll petition the fan base of a three-time Super Bowl Champion (note: that’s three times as many championships as the Ravens have won) for support in some sort of confused the-enemy-of-my-sorta-enemy-twice-removed-is-my-geographic-friend manner?

Kind of sad, if you think about it.

    Go Steelers,
    Sean

  3. JC says:

Not really. Just didn’t want Skins fans to be so lonely in 8-8, that they didn’t know a real team managed with knowledge and class was showing them how its done.

By the way, how are those three Super Bowls working out given the younger, less-tenured Ravens have won a championship more recently than the Skins?

  4. Preview and Submit says:

baltimore is more like the step brother who dropped out of school to work at a car wash…

  5. JC says:

    More like a Bentley detailer.

  6. Everett W. says:

It’s hard to support a team whose fans constantly want to slap you in the face. As a Washington area resident, I don’t hate the Ravens or
Baltimore. Many of them though do seem to hate D.C.

Even after one Super Bowl victory and renewed hopes for another one, the resentment coming from greater Baltimore towards Washington remains off the charts.

It was Ravens fans after all who posted wishes for their team’s game to run extra time earlier this season so WUSA/9 would be forced to join a Redskins broadcast in progress.

I wish nothing but the best for Baltimore in the playoffs but it’s Baltimore’s party, not mine.

  7. JC says:

I think its misleading to say that, knowing that D.C. has a lot of disdain for Baltimore as well.

Having lived in both metros for a number of years, its about even.

  8. I don’t know…I think I’ll have to agree with Everett a little.

For a while, it seems that Ravens fans have hated Skins fans while those in DC were mostly too wrapped up in their own lil’ self-loathing world to even worry about Baltimore.

  9. Broken Clipboard says:

No way I’d ever root for the Ravens.

Yes Snyder and Cerrato are a moron..but you root for the team, not how they are run. It’s just unfortunate Snyder/Cerrato are in charge.

  10. JC says:

Would you still buy a car from a rude and uninformed salesperson as well? It’s not just about the product, but the peddler as well.

Skins fans should be ashamed that the Arizona Cardinals have surpassed them in relevancy. For as much money and emotion as fans have poured into this team, Snyder’s ego diminishes it all as he laughs to the bank with it.

  11. SkinsFan4Life says:

Can you really compare the 2 franchises? One has history, the other wears purple(fuckin purple). One has Joe Gibbs, one has Brian Billick. I have rooted for the skins since I was 5, now 30 years later I am still rooting for the same team. Any Ravens fans say that? Also dont forget the 3 Super Bowl wins and 5 appearances, compared to 1 win and 1 appearance. But the number one reason you cant root for Baltimore, they used to be the Cleveland Browns, hahahahahahahahahaha!

  12. Dejuan lynch says:

Hey jc, please don’t root for my eagles… I love you like a brother and would hate to see you disappointed once dawkins rips that Lombardi trophy out of ole ray ray’s hands this time around!!! First things first, Baltimore had to get past our state mates this weekend first and if you do…. Well then the other half of Pennsylvania will have to finish y’all off!!! That’s right this superbowl is for the birds but everyone knows an eagle is a way more dominant bird than a raven!!!!!

  13. JC says:

I’d actually prefer to see the Eagles in the championship, given that the Cardinals would likely fold it up against us or the Steelers.

  14. Mark says:

I”ve been thinking about leaving the Redskins all together. I mean it’s not rooting for the Ravens is anything new. I was able to catch a good amount of their games right around the time they played the Titans and switched in Trent Dilfer for Tony Banks. After that I was hooked, especially with the Skins swimming in mediocrity.

The Redskins front office itself is incompetent, and despite the needs that scream we need lineman they still ignore it, opting for what seems to be a pick at linebacker in this years upcoming draft. I guess a lot of my defection will depend on how they do this offseason. However I would rather root for a competent local team then one run through “the good old boys” network.

Either way if the Redskins ignore the line’s this offseason then it’s going to be very easy for me to root for the city that I never got the chance to root for due to the fact that little wittle John Elway didn’t likey wikey it here.

  15. JC says:

I would love to root for the Redskins. They’ve had some classy players, and their fan base is among the best in the league. But personally, I can’t root for a team that exploits in almost everything it does.

They exploit Native Americans, they exploit fans and their money, and they exploit the value of media by buying it up. Combine that with the fact that they make no sensible efforts to get better, and you have every reason not to like them.
