Because we’ve seen what the alternative to Gilbert Arenas has been. Point guards who can suffice, but can’t support the two offensive producers, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison.
Say what you will about the attitudes, the money, all of that. The Wizards need a scoring option off the bench or possibly even starting at the point guard position. The Knicks need to unload a malcontent who would probably redefine himself in another situation.
Washington can be that situation.
If Ernie Grunfeld is as good as advertised, and Marbury is as crazy as advertised, it can work out both ways without breaking the bank. The Wizards can likely negotiate a deal just after he is bought out by the Knicks, which will bring him to Washington on a rent-to-own basis. I say rent-to-own because he will be the best kind of insurance for Gilbert Arenas to not rush back to action, and to step in fully should he not be fully healthy when he does return.
And even if he is, could you imagine a Marbury-Arenas back court for 8-15 minutes a half? Can you say scoring flurry?
Does it sound far fetched? Absolutely. But not as far fetched as 5-27, which is what the Wizards are looking at right about now. They can pull the trigger on a guy who can get you 10-15 points starting or off the bench, and a contract that can be out the door in 2010. They can insure a healthy Gilbert Arenas, and upgrade to three scoring options.
Or they can stand pat and shake their heads along with the teams that actually don’t need him like the Wizards need him.
It’s not a tough call to make.

We can’t afford his contract and stay under the luxury tax.
Dude,
Can I score some gear from you? That stuff you are smoking is obviously giving you some crazy hallucinations.
