The Beltway Bidding War for Mark Teixeira

Pay close attention this holiday to baseball, because it might be the only time when both the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles engage each other in a meaningful exercise other than securing a Chevy Chase Bank sponsorship.

A bidding war for Mark Teixeira.

If it was about the money only, Teixeira would’ve likely resigned with the Angels or Red Sox by now. But it appears to be a little more than that, and it may just be an affinity for a long term deal close to home where he can be the locally-bred hero.

So far, the Nats have held steady in their pursuit of Teixeira, because there name hasn’t dropped out of contention. But the Orioles have countered, and even though they lowballed T-Money like we all anticipated they would, they are prepared to make the pot a little sweeter.

Chances are, Teixeira wants to come home and be the face of a franchise that will be built around him. The Orioles are the further along in having pieces to make a contender, but the Nationals don’t play in the murderer’s row known as the A.L. East. There’s a give-and-take element for each club and why he may be attracted to them.

If you are a baseball fan of either the O’s or the Nats, you have to appreciate your team being brought up in national discussion for such a hot free agent prospect. In past years, these kind of talks were always between the Yanks and the Sox. Who knew that money was flying around I-295 like that?
