Official Wizards Blogger Makes the Case for Mediocrity
You have to give credit to the SportsWiz over at the official blog of the Washington Wizards. He is certainly keeping the best interest of the franchise at heart in every post. Here’s an offering from earlier this morning, in which he defends the Wiz kids’ defense of opponents’ three-point shooting.
Part of the problem is teams are finding ways to penetrate the defense and once the Wizards help they are leaving men open beyond the arc. Another big problem has been who the team has played. Atlanta and Orlando are two of the best at shooting from long range and it becomes a pick your poison, especially with Orlando, do you single cover Dwight Howard or do you double and force the team to make shots. Currently the Wizards are 18th in the league in defending the three which isnt great but hardly as bad as people are making it out to be.
He’s absolutely right. The Wizards can’t stop anyone from getting into the paint, and cannot turn them away when they inevitably intrude the post. That opens up shots for the perimeter.
But while the eternal optimist is right about Atlanta and Orlando, that doesn’t account for sniping the Wizards have taken at the hands of Houston, New York, Detroit and Miami.
SportzWiz should be commended for trying to hold down positivity for the Wizards, even though ticket prices have dramatically dropped to $11 for some seats. But until Agent Zero can return to provide some offensive counterpunch to these three-point barrages, or the Wizards wise up and get Stephon Marbury, the Verizon Center will continue to be a quantum of solace for Wizard faithful.
