Two of These Wizards Do Not Belong
The NBA has released its 2009 NBA All-Star ballot, and four Washington Wizards are eligible to make the squad. Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison are the gimmes, of course. But what other two Wizards are up for voting?
Gilbert “Ballot Box” Arenas made it on the swag of seasons past, but there’s one more Wizard that you might not expect.
Is it JaVale McGee, who could possibly leap over an Astroline van flat-footed?
Is it DeShawn Stevenson, who is realizing that without Arenas, he’s mostly just a space holder for Nick Young?
Yep. The same Brendan Haywood who just last year discovered the virtues of being an offensive threat and a consistent double-digit rebounder. The same Brendan Haywood who has missed the entire season thus far with an injured wrist.
When did Brendan Haywood earn all-star swag? Because whenever it happened, I must have missed it while focusing on Eddie Jordan’s propensity to glare at him for a missed defensive rotation. I’m willing to bet that he gets the fewest votes of anyone on the Eastern Conference ballot, even among Wizards fans who are still cold to the Ralph Tresvant sensitivity he showed in the post leading up to last season.
I’m glad the league recognizes him as big man, instead of a player with height who starts for the Wizards. He’s got about 35 games until JaVale takes his job full-time and he demands a trade, so he might as well enjoy the limited recognition while voting is still the vogue thing to do.
