Only the Wizards Die By the Three
It happened last night at home against the Houston Rockets, and it happened tonight on the road against the New York Knicks.
Three-pointers absolutely destroy the Washington Wizards.
And I’m not talking about a last second three destroying you. I’m talking about Death Star destruction. The Wizards, in all of their allergic reaction to defense of any kind, continue to give up pride beyond the three point line.
These are the facts. The Wizards allowed seven players on the New York Knicks team to demoralize them late in the game. And this wasn’t some kind of funky rotation by Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni, they only have seven players on the roster after some blockbuster trades the day before.
With the exeception of Chris Duhon, here is the list of players who had at least 20 points tonight on the Wiz kids. Nate Robinson, Quention Richardson, David Lee and Wilson Chandler. Let’s be honest; two of those four don’t even belong in the league, but you can keep a job messing with the Wizards.
The Knicks hit 16 three pointers on the evening, which is more likely on NBA 2K9 than it is in an acutal NBA game. Once again, the Wizards held a fourth-quarter lead, only to watch it shrink in a tidal wave of three-point shooting and slow reacting perimeter defense.
You would think that a team with two all-star caliber veterans would take a hint about staying in front of a man, but night in and night out, they simply don’t get it. This is not the first time a three-point barrage has handed the Wizards an embarrassing loss, and it likely won’t be the last. But something has to give for this team to earn respectability, let alone a playoff berth.
