Hoyas Reload on Destroyas

They have no Roy Hibbert, no Jonathan Wallace, and with last spring’s tournament flop against Stephen Curry and Davidson, the Georgetown Hoyas appeared headed for a whoopin’ session with Big John Thompson.

But lo and behold, the Hoyas are back with a starting five that might just be better than the 2007 Final Four core. From top to bottom, the Hoyas have the talent to contend for a Big East championship, and surprise in the national tournament.

If Jeff Green was the straw that stirred the Hoyas post-season drink, then let’s just nickname DaJuan Summers Incredible Hulk now. Summers is a far more advanced scorer than Green, and could be an impact defender in conference.

Jonathan Wallace’s leadership will be missed, but a little bit of reckless won’t be all bad for the Hoyas. Barrage won’t even begin to describe the three-point display that Chris Wright, Austin Freeman and Jesse Sapp are going to put on. Many will be put up, few will fall, but the good news is that rebounds long and short will likely be inhaled by the second best center in the city next to JaVale McGee, Greg Monroe.

We could be looking at the next coming of Greg Oden, and that’s saying something because he’s only two years removed from putting the Hoyas out of the Final Four. Monroe has all-world talent, and very little expectations beyond blocking shots, and getting put-back dunks.

And pounding Kyle Singler and the Duke Blue Devils into jelly come January.

The Hoyas are going to be young, but they will be battle-tested and prime for a big tournament run. If they aren’t, then they can always take comfort in the fact that they are perpetually better than the Maryland Terrapins.
