Why the Maryland Terrapins Have to Beat Wake Forest

By JC • on October 7, 2008

The Maryland Terrapins only have two losses on the season, and are currently in the log jam that is the ACC Atlantic Division standings. The North Carolina Tar Heels are now a contender in the conference, and N.C. State is the only perceived break in the four-game stretch that offers up three top-25 teams.

So there’s no other choice but to beat Wake Forest to maintain hopes for a bowl appearance not sponsored by Meineke.

A loss against the Demon Deacons nullifies anything that happens the rest of the way. North Carolina and Virginia Tech figure to win their next two games, which mounts the pressure to win at Virginia Tech. Not to mention that late season run the Terps will need at home against Florida State and at Boston College, a tall order for a squad that beat Clemson on the road only to travel up I-95 for a throttling in Charlottesville.

There is no doubt that Maryland can have one of those runs and go undefeated the rest of the way. Or, they can wilt and cough up a 7-5 effort. Either way, the path for the Terps’ season goes through Wake Forest.
