Where is the Wizards Bandwagon?

Once upon a time, a bandwagon departed the parking lot of RFK Stadium, riled up citizens of the Washington-Metro area, and barreled into Super Bowl XXVI. In 2008, the Skins bandwagon is humming and ready to roll, but that’s another post to be written after Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles is in the books.

But with the training camp for the Washington Wizards underway, shouldn’t the city be willing to bring a bandwagon out for the more successful, more entertaining Wizards franchise?

In the last five seasons, the Wizards have been the more-reliable outlet for fickle fandom in the Metro area. Can you trust them to go beyond the first round? Not at all, but we’ve been able to count on the same coach being there, an owner who allows his front office to make sound decisions, and a team that is more than a cash cow for misplaced sport allegiance.

At three positions, the Wizards have top ten talent in Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butlet and Antawn Jamison. The Redskins have Jason Campbell coming into focus as a star, and Clinton Portis and Santana Moss and Chris Cooley as bonafide football elite. Advantage Skins, but are the past three seasons of solid signings and drafting enough to make up for the Bruce Smiths, Deion Sanders, Jeff Georges and now, Jason Taylors of the world?

Let’s just say signing Antonio Daniels isn’t killing them in the back pages of the sports section.

So why does it take rap beef and Soulja Boi to get D.C. on a bandwagon for the Wizards? Maybe Abe Pollin should run through the halls of the Verizon Center yelling, “When we play with finesse, we win!” Maybe that will get it rolling.

Or what if Nick Young inadvertently takes a picture of his posterior in a mirror and accidentally posts it to Gilbert Arenas’ blog? Maybe that’s what will bring a Wiz Wagon out of the garage.

It’s got to be something, because this team deserves a lot more than the faith of Wizards fans two weeks before the start of the playoffs.

Uhh….I don’t think Abe Pollin is running anywhere these days.

Not in a physical sense. Just the “Look at me! I’m a rich douchebag!” kind of way.
