Vernon Davis Speaks on the Mike Singletary Incident

I try to take care of our homegrown talent in this space, so I’ll take this opportunity let you know that Vernon Davis should be commended on his handling of the Mike Singletary blow up. The D.C. native could’ve crawled into a corner for a few days and come out swinging in the media, but he opted for the mature statement of buying into the “team first” concept.

Coach Singletary always preaches we have to stay together and he’s right, team first. It’s about the team, it ain’t about me, it ain’t about the coaches, it ain’t about individuals. It’s about the team. When you’re playing this game, especially where we’re at right now. We’re at a point right now where we need to come out of a hole. It’s tough. We really have to be a team at this point and depend on each other.

The fact that he did it on YardBarker shows a few things about him, and about this new generation of athletes. Personally, it gives the impression that he actually processed the incident, and thought enough about it to sit down at a computer and arrange his thoughts. He could’ve optioned for the statement from the 49ers PR staff, could’ve issued something through his agent, or not said anything besides “it happened, we’re moving on.”

Instead, he owned it genuinely.

Its not that often you get a high-paid athlete showing humility when he doesn’t have to. Sexier stories are about trade-demanding, attention-hawking players who want to ensure self-preservation above all else. That’s justifiable in a sport where a hit can render you useless and forgotten in a matter of seconds.

The 49ers should be glad to have Davis on the team. They have young talent and a capable head coach in Mike Singletary. But more than that, Davis has provided the sqad a nice view of their future from the vantage point of the high road.
