Terps Basketball Aspires to B-More Careful

So, the Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team has finally tapped into the basketball hotbed that is Baltimore City. And in an official way, as this year’s squad will feature three former Baltimore prep stars in Sean Mosley, Braxton Dupree and Dino Gregory.

But it’s clear that there’s more between Baltimore and College Park that I-95. There’s much tension there, and even when he doesn’t want to admit, head coach Gary Williams still admits it.

“The success story of those players coming out of Baltimore is not something that is talked about much in Baltimore. If you watch players from Baltimore and where they’ve gone and what they’ve done, I think we’ve done as good as any school that’s had more than one or two players from Baltimore.”

Interesting. Up here in Baltimore, people talk about Carmelo Anthony, Dante Green, and Sam Cassell all the time. Heck, its not that uncommon to hear a Muggsy Bogues reference now and then.

You can’t blame Gary for trying. He got Keith Booth. He got Juan Dixon. In his mind, he’s likely done all that he could do. But in a city where Bob Wade commands a certain amount of reverence, and the mention of College Park infringes on that allegiance, you’d be hard pressed to find sons and nephews who don’t have a relative whispering in their ear about not attending the University of Maryland.

Not to mention the fact that everyone in Baltimore and beyond knows that Gary Williams is an egotistical maniac. Why stay home to get berated and humiliated? Might as well head to Syracuse or North Carolina and catch the same hell, with a totally different vortex of freaky white girls waiting for you after practice.

I’m happy for the Charm City crew at College Park, but I’ll likely temper a lot of my jubilation once the season starts. They will be the reason Maryland is able to become a recruiting giant in the area, and there’s two reasons why I can’t get with that.

One, because Gary Williams will get all of the credit, and two, because it will take away from Todd Bozeman’s swag at Morgan State.
