Maybe its too much to ask. After all, the Detroit Pistons’ recent run wasn’t built on a glittering offense, but a tough and rusty defense.
So maybe that’s the attitude we should take when considering the Washington Wizards and their chances to contend in the Eastern Conference. Forget defense, let’s just score more points than everybody and run them out of the gym. Maybe if we take that perspective, Eddie Jordan commenting on defense won’t hurt so bad.
“We still need to get better defensively as far as picking people up and recognizing situations. Right now, the defense knows our offense so maybe when we get back to Verizon Center, our first practice will be going against an offense other than our own so we can play the defense we are looking for.”
Perhaps there was something to the whole “Phoenix Suns of the East” thing Gilbert Arenas was talking last year. Defense doesn’t get you paid, laid or well-rested for the playoffs. It takes work and a mental toughness to say that you won’t be beaten on any possession by your opponent.
And since the Wizards, at least up to this point, refuse to take on that mentality, perhaps its just best to root for 110 points and the final buzzer.
