Maryland Beats Cal… Are We Surprised?
So…the Terps did something we thought they could do, but certainly didn’t expect them to do. The team that struggled at home against Delaware, and outright choked against Middle Tennessee State, looked like a lock for the ACC title at home against California today.
But we know they aren’t. So the question is, just what are these Terrapins?
The Terps have a bad habit of losing to teams that are below them, and beating teams that are above them. Call it the Gary Williams syndrome. Top 25 teams fear them, but they are the patron saints of BCS busters.
How can you adequately judge a team that is both Perry Mason and My Cousin Vinny at the same time? How can you bet on a team that has one of the best rushing attacks in the country through three games, but legitimate questions at quarterback? Where’s the defensive identity for a squad that has struggled against two inferior opponents, but just shut down one of the top offensive units in the nation?
No. It’s not fair.
The Terps have another home game against Eastern Carolina, and two straight on the road at Clemson and the University of Virginia. They are likely to go 2-1 in this stretch, but you’d have better luck keeping the ladies off of Greivis Vasquez than predicting the talent and heart of this team.

Gary Williams Syndrome…I like that.
I was sure surprised that they won….must’ve been the result of Crap-10 team + equivalent of early morning game on the West Coast.
2-1 in the next three is a big stretch though…Clemson and East Carolina will be too much for the Terps to handle.
I think they can get their next one at home, and take one at Clemson or UVA. Not because of their talent level, but because I think there’s something to the Fridge’s new attitude on letting players work out of things.
[...] I correctly predicted that the Terps would go 2-1 in the last three game stretch, but incorrectly predicted that the loss would be at Clemson instead of at Virginia. You don’t know what’s going to happen with any Terps team, and that much we can accept. But what we shouldn’t accept is a tremendous talent like Heyward-Bey’s being shut out of the Terps’ real chances at an ACC title, or a lucrative professional career. Share and Enjoy: [...]
