Durant Brooks Can’t Win

The Washington Redskins pulled out their second straight home victory today over the Arizona Cardinals. For the second straight week, Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell appeared steady and efficient, Santana Moss and Clinton Portis came up big in key moments, and Jim Zorn looked like a halfway decent playcaller.

But as a motivational speaker? Eh, not so much.

He chewed out punter/place holder Durant Brooks for apparently calling for the ball before the referee actually set it down prior to Shaun Suisham’s fourth-quarter field goal miss.

“I was shell shocked a little bit,” said Brooks, whom Zorn berated on the sideline after place kicker Shaun Suisham missed a 52-yard kick with 3 minutes 29 seconds remaining in the game.

“He thought I was out of the game [mentally], and it was a critical time in the game. I came off to the sideline, and he got really upset. I should have made sure that Ethan had the ball. I can take the blame for that.”

By the way, Brooks actually punted for an average of more than 42 yards this week, but never mind that. Calling for a ball that hasn’t been placed yet is a high crime to Zorn. Forget keeping pace with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants this weekend, forget that both offense and defense looked pretty good, and that Brian Mitchell has yet to step to Clinton Portis.

You call for that ball when its on the ground, son. And not a second sooner.

  1. [...] Durant Brooks – Netted over 40 yards per punt, but still got chewed out by Zorn for something he did on Suisham’s 52-yard miss. [...]

Kid needs to get his act together….I’d worry more about getting booed by the FedEx fans for mediocre punting than getting chewed out by Zorn.

  3. JC says:

That would surely be a shame…for the punter to be a whipping boy on what appears to be a good team.

But the bigger question is, why doesn’t Todd Collins hold?
