Do Redskins Fans REALLY Want Dallas?

I know you love your Washington Redskins, and are excited about their great 2-1 start to the season. But as the cheers rose from the annals of FedEx Field last week of, “We Want Dallas!” you have to ask yourselves:

Do you truly WANT Dallas?

I know Jim Zorn has sparked something in people around here, and its not just a love of  mountain biking. He’s got the D.C. Metro area believing in throwing the ball, taking chances, and ripping the rookie punter. There is no conservative when it comes to the Zorn, and that’s a good thing with a young and talented offense.

But do you really want to run up on a division rival that has all the makings of a Super Bowl champion? Is that what you really want?

If you win, you can get amped that the Cowboys lost their first game of the season. They’ll brush it off, but you’ll treasure it as if it was a playoff victory. And as the history of the rivalry goes, the Skins’ will likely lose the second, and most important game of the season series.

If the Redskins lose on Sunday, the Cowboys go to 4-0 while your team goes to 2-2. The distance gets a little wider, but certainly manageable in a long season.

It’s a Catch-22, really. The Dallas Cowboys are the best team in football far and away, and no matter how you slice it, there’s no proof that you can knock them off that mantle. Just as the New York Giants were not the New Orleans Saints, the Arizona Cardinals are not the Cowboys.

NFC looks can be deceiving.

It’s one thing to say you want the Cowboys, but do you mean it? The Boys’ haven’t slouched this entire season, while the Redskins have often had to play catch up in the second half of games.

The Skins have looked efficient on offense, but can sputter at times. Defensive turnovers have mostly been on tipped passes or errant throws, rather than great positioning or scheming.

So be careful what you ask for, Redskins fans. I’m not saying you should shy away from the challenge, but aggressively embracing it may be result in a hard tumble from the easy bike ride that has been the first few games of the season.

And it may be a fall where recovery may not be an easy option.

Nope…not enough to chant it, but the Skins gotta play the Boys sometime I suppose.

I admit that Dallas does look damn good, but I’m not exactly ready to anoint them head and shoulders above the rest of a league saturated with parity.

And the Skins…they still have a loooong way to go….but there’s no better time to have a true test of yourselves.

Thing is, at least with beating New Orleans and Arizona (neither team is that bad), the Skins are going into the game with some confidence under their belt and thinking they can win, rather than aiming for a moral victory.

    Great piece by the way….

Thanks. I’m not a Cowboys or Redskins enthusiast in the least bit, but I do think this game will provide direction on how the Redskins progress through the rest of the season.

A win, and you have to look at them as a serious team, at least in the NFC.
