Will the Baltimore Orioles Ever Be Good?
It may sound funny, but with the unexpected turn of fate for the Tampa Bay Rays, it’s a legitimate question. In a division with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and presumptively upstart Rays, will the Baltimore Orioles ever have a chance to win?
It was different when it was just a annual two-man race for the A.L. East, but this season is out of hand. Were the Rays in their usual position of basement dwellers, the Orioles would be in fourth place and five back of the second-place Yankees.
Instead, the Orioles are last in the division, two games under .500, have dropped three straight division wins to the Toronto Blue Jays, and have a three-game road stretch at Boston this weekend.
As good as the Birds have looked this season, it might be the glass ceiling for the franchise. They would have to secure a dominant pitcher and at least one bonafide power hitter to complement their current roster, just to keep pace with the Yankees and Red Sox.
There’s a chance that the farm system talent in place may elevate the Orioles within three years, but will there be reason to care by then?
