Why The Washington Nationals Should Sign Barry Bonds

By JC • on July 7, 2008

They are in the cellar when it comes to attendance numbers and television ratings. They have more injuries than the Washington Redskins in Week 4 of an NFL season.

And most of all, the Washington Nationals have nothing to play for the rest of the way.

So why not give everyone something to talk about and sign Barry Bonds to fix everything that ails the ballclub?

If for any other reason than instant relevance, signing Barry Bonds could endear a struggling young franchise the chance to galvanize people against it - and convert them into believers once they do start winning. After all, they can’t claim the “clubhouse cancer” excuse - they signed Elijah Dukes and it turned out pretty good for them and him.

Until the other day, at least.

So why not bring a legitimate bat into a newly minted ballpark? It’s no more or less of a franchise suicide note than the Nats’ atrocious record and paltry stats. Bonds would elicit from baseball fans sports’ most precious resource - emotion, something that has been severely lacking from the franchise and fan base this entire season.

Sure he might go to jail, but until then, you’re guaranteed 20 minutes of coverage on every major sports network in the country. That’s a much better deal then what you get on MASN and NBC 4.

Sure, he might only hit six home runs, but you’re better off selling the potential of him hitting them then the promise that no one else will. Unless its a walk-off home run, which the Nats seem to be pretty good at.

Do Nats fans a favor. Do Major League Baseball a favor. Sign Barry Bonds and give people something to care about.

Point: I guess you have to hit rock-bottom before going up…..signing Barry Bonds would get the Nats to the depths.

Counter Point: To make him play the field would be a disgrace to mankind.
