Who Gets Gilbert Arenas’ Money?

By JC • on July 22, 2008

Now that Gil has gotten his grown man on and signed for less money, who could be the most logical free agent signing for the Washington Wizards?

Draft pick JaVale McGee, who has looked solid in summer league but not dominant, should be their primary post signing, but one more couldn’t hurt. They could also use a back up for Caron Butler, but that would be asking for a lot to get both.

To that end, here’s a list of potential free agents that could improve the Wizards chances at advancing through the 2008-09 NBA Playoffs.

Kurt Thomas - Way past his prime, but still is a step above being a big body in the post. Can shoot free throws well and provide veteran leadership.

C.J. Miles - Could be the spot up shooter the Wizards are looking for.

Carlos Arroyo - Might be a better long term solution for the Wizards than Dee Brown.

Randolph Morris - Could be another big body to fill in well with the seven-footers.

OKC signed CJ Miles to a an offer sheet that Utah probably won’t match (I hear it’s for four-years and $15 million).

The Wizards might not be enough of a contender for Kurt Thomas.

Randolph Morris is too much of a project….that label should be reserved for McGee.

Arroyo is intriguing….but will not opt for a 3rd string PG position…..one which Dee Brown is more than happy with. And yes, Dee B is not a long term solution….I suppose the Wiz won’t start looking at one of those until Antonio Daniels’ contract has about a year left.

I’d like Grunfeld to do something, but he likes the flexibility of a roster spot, and with the number of current Wizards up to 14, I doubt he goes after anyone else unless a trade is made.

I agree with your sentiment on McGee, and my hope is that he turns out to be more than a 6 and 6 man in his first year. It will be the only way the Wiz can be taken seriously by other Eastern Conference teams with big men (Magic, Celtics, Raptors, Pistons).
