Prince George’s County is the Boxing Capital of the World

Two fighters, Antonio Magruder and Gary Russell Jr. are carrying on a legacy of boxing made famous in the area by Sugar Ray Leonard more than 30 years ago.

Russell, a Capital Heights native will compete in Beijing next month as the United States premier hope for boxing gold. Three years ago, he became only the second boxer in U.S. history to win both the U.S. Championships and Golden Gloves before the age of 17.

Magruder, a Suitland native featured on the front page of this morning’s Post sports, won gold at this year’s Junior Olympics and is ranked number 12 in the world at 114 weight class.

P.G. County is already on the rise for basketball (See Micahel Beasley, Kevin Durant, Ty Lawson, etc), and the fight game is making stong headway in attracting some of the area’s best athletes. You can attribute it to the plethora of boxing facilities, the natural allure of the sweet science, or the fact that if you don’t throw hands in P.G., you’ll have a slimmer chance against the crooked-ass cops.
