Orioles and Nationals – Rival Crime Syndicates

DC and Baltimore are healthy rivals to say the least. They usually run neck and neck in poor education, government corruption, and gentrification.

Sports is no exception to this culture, even in their criminal controversies. This week alone, the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals have been embroiled in scandal worthy of Frank Lucas’ stamp of approval.

Both teams had a place in the Mitchell Report, with the Orioles winning that battle hands down. This week, the Orioles were tied to a betting scandal involving one of their former scouts, a similar incident faced by the Nationals in 2006.

But the Nationals take the title of most criminally active squad in the region with recent allegations against general manager Jim Bowden and special assistant Jose Rijo. Accused of taking money off the top of signing bonuses reserved for Dominican prospects, the FBI has been at the Nats’ doorstep as recently as last month, and it was certainly not for the hook-up on Ben’s Chili Bowl.

Maybe it’s just the culture of the region that trips up these franchises. After all, the acting bug is a thriving species among New York and Los Angeles clubs. But the Orioles and Nationals would be well-suited to find a decent repellent for the felony bug that is attacking franchise members and the credibility of their sport.
