David Eckstein? Really?

When the Baltimore Orioles jettisoned shortstop Miguel Tejada, the team was able to rid itself of an unhappy steroid user who had seen better days prior to his stop in Charm City. We even braced ourselves for Tejada having a breakout season with the Houston Astros.

What we didn’t expect was an absolute failure in the infield back here in Baltimore.

Which leads us to the Orioles pursuing David Eckstein of the Toronto Blue Jays. Sure, he’s won two World Series, one of which brought him a series MVP award.

He also has 29 errors over the last season and a half, which doesn’t seem like much of an upgrade for the Orioles, who have started five players at shortstop this season. Pile that on his .273 batting average and one home run this season, and you’ve got yourself a made-to-order bust.

If you aren’t signing him for fielding accuracy, and you aren’t signing him for run production, what in the Eckstein are you looking at him for?
