Buster Olney Knows Not of What He Speaks

July 14, 2008

You may ask, why is Buster Olney the subject of a reborn Baltimore-Washington sports blog? Well, because Olney was a sportswriter for the Baltimore Sun, and was the lead writer on Cal Ripken Jr. breaking the all-time consecutive games played record.

So, that makes him a local guy of sorts.

And being a local guy who covered the Orioles before their full plummet into obscurity, it saddens me to report that when it comes to baseball predictions, he’s probably the worst you can find.

According to WhereIStand.com, Olney ranks last on a compiled list of 42 sports writers, news casters, television personalities, bloggers and media outlets who made divisional predictions on the 2008 MLB season. At the half way mark, based on the site’s scoring system, Olney looks like a complete dumbo.

This is not to criticize Olney as a reporter, as I think he’s one of the best. It’s just that he couldn’t pick a winner if you spotted him Bill Russell, Muhammad Ali and Lance Armstrong. There’s still a long ways to go on some, but for the most part, ESPN’s resident baseball guru is looking quite gonzo.

Are you surprised? Buster Olney reports trade “rumors” on a weekly basis that are nowhere near close to correct. He’s wrong quite a bit. I don’t even read his stuff anymore.. except for that article he just did on A-Rod being too scared to participate in the Home Run Derby. That made me a chuckle a bit.

    1. You made me laugh out loud with that.

    2. He was right on with the Mariners firing the GM, but I guess that wasn’t so much of an insight as it was inevitable.
