Interesting column in the Star-Tribune today, with ruminations on what could have been had the Minnesota Timberwolves kept Ray Allen with the fifth pick in the 1996 NBA Draft instead of trading for Stephon Marbury.
It’s possible that an Allen-Garnett combo would have been as explosive as the Great Marbury-Garnett experiment. Neither of the three players were known for being great teammates early on in their careers, but more than that, the don’t call Allen Jesus Shuttlesworth for his defensive tenacity, something that Garnett’s career was built upon.
Save for Minnesota Timberwolves fans, everything turned out exactly how it was supposed to. Allen and Garnett have a championship with a stellar franchise, Marbury’s legacy is built upon playoff futility and sleeping with interns, and Kevin McHale still sucks as a GM.
