Everywhere I look, Boston Celtic fans are a rung below cautious optimism about their team’s ability to shut the 2008 NBA Finals down. If I didn’t know any better, they actually believe that their team could lose this thing.
Don’t worry Celtics fans. This one doesn’t go to Game 7.
Road weariness won’t let it happen. Kevin Garnett’s defense won’t let it happen. And hopefully, you fans won’t let it happen.
It was pretty predictable that the Los Angeles Lakers would take Game 5. All good rivalries have to go at least six, with the exception of the Lakers 2004 debacle. Doc Rivers hasn’t let you down in this series, and six games is enough for advertisers to be content with ratings.
Besides, your team is not the Washington Wizards. The Boston Celtics enjoy defense. It feeds their desire and their execution on the other end. Breathe a collective sigh of relief, green faithful; you are facing a young bunch of chokers that don’t play particularly well with each other when the game is on the line.
So even if you do fall apart defensively in the opening as you are prone to do, your opponent doesn’t have the veteran leadership or the emotional talent to hold it together.
Don’t get caught up in Boston Red Sox fever. I know it’s customary for you guys to come so close, only to blow it, but those days are gone. I would assume that in winning every championship in sight in every sport, you guys have gotten beyond the propensity for nervousness in championship games, but apparently not.
Chill. Relax.
Enjoy the parade later this week.
