The Georgetown Hoyas Tip-Off Strategy
October 31, 2007
Count on Hoya Hoops to provide some unique insight for the 08′ edition Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball squad. Why be bothered with stories about their national ranking, their conference rankings, or how they crank dat with Jerry Rice, when you could focus more on how they could intimidate teams with who they send out for the opening tip-off.
The author of this post is so confident of the Hoyas dominance, that they can virtually send anyone out to jump it up. Never mind the legacy of G-Town big men, forget that no one is sure of who their big player will be minus Jeff Green. It starts at tip-off and finishes with an NCAA championship.
And maybe a routine from Jerry Rice.
The Compliance Linebacker

I know this isn’t Baltimore-Washington related, but it’s probably the most hilarious sports video out in the last 40 minutes. Check out this special series produced by Iowa State’s athletic compliance office. Shades of Terry Tate doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Kobe to Washington? Stay Tuned
October 29, 2007
This has been a rumor in the making since the summer time, but the Kobe-for-Gilbert rumors are starting to pick up steam ever since Gil said he wouldn’t mind playing in La-La Land if he decided to leave Washington. I doubt if it would happen, as the Wizards would have to give up too much and Lakers would be in much of the same predicament they are currently in with Gilbert; a superstar that can’t do it all on his own.
Revenge of the Baltimore-Washington Area Family
October 29, 2007
Continuing my ongoing coverage of the death of the Washington Redskins, we turn our attention to how the Baltimore-Washington sports family is going to properly avenge this massacre. This is on some Godfather stuff now, and hoods from the Charm and Chocolate cities aren’t going to take this lightly.
Here’s a look at some upcoming games where the area will have opportunities to give the New England region its comeuppance.
Wizards vs. Celtics (11/02) - To hell with the Big Three. The Wizards have been getting their big three on for a couple of seasons now. They might as well call this game Hoop-It-Up, because it’s going to be three on three all night. If anyone can avenge the unjust demise of the Redskins, it’s Agent Zero.
Capitals vs. Bruins (12/27) - Yeah, all you Boston fans out there. Guess you are a little happy cause you got another World Series under your belt. Great. Now you’re going to have something in your face two days after Christmas, and believe me, Ovechkin don’t give a damn bout’ no Christmas.
Maryland Terrapins vs. Boston College (11/10) - So you got the #2 team in the country in college football up there? So what. Clemson guaranteed a game against the Terps and won? So what. Those are just games. This is war.
The Death of the Washington Redskins
October 29, 2007
The saddest part about the Washington Redskins drubbing at the hands of Goliath aka the New England Patriots wasn’t the final 52-7 score.
It wasn’t the fact that the Patriots didn’t mind running up the score late in the fourth quarter, including going for fourth down conversions.
It was the fact that throughout the entire game, it all looked so easy.
I won’t pretend. I don’t like the Redskins at all. It’s not the players. It’s not the coaches. It’s mostly the history of the franchise and the arrogance of the people running it now. But as a sports fan above all else, there is a place in everyone’s heart for sportsmanship. And yesterday was not a display of that honorable place.
This game could mean the end for the Redskins’ season, because I’m not sure how feasible it is for any team to mentally recover from a game Troy Aikman openly called “a beating.” Along with the fact that the Skins trail the Giants and Cowboys in the division, and neither of those teams give any appearance of looking back, it doesn’t look good for the burgundy and gold. I won’t expound upon my feelings, but here are feelings from some of my DC sports counterparts.
F*ck You, Belichick. (Mr. Irrelevant)

Bad Officiating in Black College Football: No Contest
October 26, 2007
Originally Published: HBCU Sports Blog
If you watched ESPN late Saturday night, you might have seen the number one play of the day in the country came from a heated contest between Morgan State University and Delaware State University. The play was a Delaware State 107-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter after an apparent 1-yard touchdown run by Morgan, that ultimately helped the Hornets to a 25-17 homecoming victory and a significant change in the MEAC conference championship race.
Morgan State officials have put in an appeal to have the game ruled a ‘no-contest,’ which effectively would take away the Delaware State win, and rearrange a muddle at the top of the standings between several teams, including Morgan and Delaware State.
While the conference has acknowledged mistakes on that touchdown run, and another play involving a blocked punt, they have not decided if the mistakes are critical enough to strike a win from the record. The MEAC has a very recent history with bad play calling, with three officials being suspended for “inaccurate calls” in a September game between Bethune-Cookman University and Norfolk State.
Sadly, these types of occurrences can add to the perception of black college football as subpar competition to other football conferences. While many of the nation’s top high school athletes are attracted to larger, traditionally white institutions for better facilities and more exposure, the four historically black athletic conferences (MEAC, SWAC, CIAA, SIAC) field quality competition and are proving to be a viable attraction on the national landscape. ESPNU broadcasts a full slate of black college football and basketball classics, and other notable match ups, while other networks such as Comcast and Cox Cable also broadcast regionally popular games.
The instances are few, but they are one too many for colleges and conferences that are competing in recruiting and fan support from larger institutions. Earlier this month, Prairie View A&M football coach Henry Frazier III blasted officials (in a game his team won) for inaccurate calls. The SWAC commissioner did acknowledge errors in officiating in the 17-7 victory for Prairie View over Alcorn State, in which PVAM was penalized 9 times for 78 yards.
Officials are always going to be called into question on close calls at close times, but a steady level of inconsistency with officiating diminishes much more than what happens on the field or court.
Terps and Midshipmen Settle Differences - Commit to 2010 Matchup
October 25, 2007
Despite the crying done by the Naval Academy regarding Maryland’s 2006 choice of bowl appearance, the two programs have agreed to meet on the football field in 2010.
The game will be played at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on September 4, 2010. The previous meeting between the two teams was close in margin, and a success in profit. The Terps defeated the Midshipmen 23-20 in 2005, and guaranteed the schools about $1 million each.
With the considerable regional interest in the game, it would be good to grow into an annual event. It would also be a good chance for the Midshipmen to get out every once in a while, considering the school’s efforts to transform them into robots.
Halloween in the Baltimore-Washington Area
October 24, 2007
With Halloween quickly approaching, everybody is getting into the spirit of what they will be wearing for the occasion. There’s sure to be huge parties in Baltimore and Washington, and if our beloved Calvin Booth is any measure, members of area teams will be sure to do it up in the costume department.
But for those that might still be on the fence about their alias for the evening, I would like to suggest some ideas that are historically relevant, socially popular, and eerily similar in personality to the players themselves.
I give you, the Motown Sound.
Gilbert Arenas as Marvin Gaye - This one is the easiest pick of all. Love of the ladies? Check. Mystery factor? Check. Impeccable professional swag? Check.
Ray Lewis as David Ruffin - How do you link an R&B legend and an all-pro, tackling machine? One word: Powerful.
Clinton Portis as Rick James - No need for explanations here. It’s all about the funk of it.
Brendan Haywood as Diana Ross - Diva to the max.
Daniel Snyder as Berry Gordy Jr. - The man behind the music…And the madness.
Melo’s Blog

And now for the latest YardBarker pro athlete addition and potential rival to Gilbert Arenas for best blog, it’s B-More native and NBA star Carmelo Anthony.
I fully expect plenty of intentional and unintentional humor, his candid views on stardom, and his thoughts on this upcoming season of ‘The Wire.’ YardBarker is truly the standard for professional athlete blogs, and I’m not just saying that because I’m on the network.
