Naval Academy Won’t Let Go of Its Summer of Dumb

by JC on August 30, 2007

After crying earlier this summer about the Maryland Terrapins not wanting to play with them in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, the leadership of the Naval Academy now have another ridiculous feather to put in their dunce caps. After new rules prohibiting Midshipmen from traveling to Philadelphia for this weekend’s opening game against Temple University drew fire from a certain high-profile faculty member, the academy has allowed 77 Middies to travel to the game.

The paltry attendance will be in response to a formal invitation from TU athletics for all Midshipmen to receive free admission. The Middies will also be required to pay $25 to cheer on their team.

For a program that now enjoys certain level of respectability after years of lacking it in football circles, this is one of the most counter-productive moves ever made from internal leadership. The Middies should be welcomed in any stadium they choose to support their team, and shouldn’t have to worry about leadership trying to hinder the college experience. The efforts of leadership to improve training and preparedness for tomorrow’s officers has gone far enough; now the academy just looks bad almost week in and week out for one reason or another.

Get the Middies some food,
let them go to the games they want to go to, and shut the hell up.
