Former Maryland Terrapin, Washington Wizard Lonny Baxter Busted On Gun Charges

by JC on August 31, 2007

Here’s a piece from the Baltimore Sun on former Maryland Terrapin and Washington Wizard Lonny Baxter. A major part of the school’s men’s basketball championship in 2002, Baxter has been sentenced to 60 days in prison on a federal gun charge after pleading guilty to delivering undeclared firearms on two occasions while playing for the Houston Rockets in 2006. Baxter had signed a contract with Spanish club DKV Joventut Badalona, and it is not clear whether the forward’s contract will be voided.

This is a strange ending to a strange case. The whole incident began in August of last year when Baxter was arrested after firing one of his illegally shipped guns into the air just blocks from the White House. According to the Sun, a federal prosecutor was quoted as saying Baxter had “a fascination with guns,” and that Baxter himself admitted in an interview that his interest in firearms was done.

No word on if Terps’ head coach Gary Williams sweated through his blazer upon hearing the news, or if Duke fans plan on incorporating gun control into their Terrapin taunts.
