Clinton Portis on Borrowed Time with Washington Redskins?

by JC on August 29, 2007

Here’s a report from the Washington Times that has Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis openly acknowledging that limited durability may ultimately lead to his exit from the team after this season.

Last season, shoulder and hand injuries plagued Portis’ performance and led to the world’s introduction to Ladell Betts, who had five consecutive games of 100 or more rushing yards. Knee tendinitis has sidelined Portis for the duration of preseason, and Portis believes that it’s time to put up or shut up.

“The world forgot about me this year,” he said. “I have to make it work this year or I’ll be out of here and probably be doing these same interviews somewhere else.”

You have to wonder if this is indeed Portis’ sentiment, or an echo of a warning from management. On a team known for shuffling well-known players like expensive cards, both sides of this story might be playing their last hand on the Clinton administration in Washington.
