Navy Won’t Join the Big East - Why Not?

by JC on July 18, 2007

The Midshipmen are just fine partying on their own. As such, the football program has no designs to join the Big East despite numerous overtures from the depleted football conference.

Seems the Middies are perfectly satisfied with getting trounced twice a year by Notre Dame and one other power conference fill-in-the-blank, and competing against eight other teams. I know they aren’t getting money like the Irish when it comes to independent status, but they do have the benefit of scheduling, and perhaps that means the most to them. But with a couple of solid seasons under their belt and a great following nation wide, a jump to Big East territory would not be bad. West Virginia and Louisville would be guaranteed losses for the next couple of years, but they are in step with Cincy and UConn, and not far behind Rutgers. (if Navy’s appearance in last season’s Meineke Car Care Bowl means anything)

They play an exciting style of run attack football that has upset written all over it, and would easily be considered for national ranking in a few seasons. Can’t say the same for Army, but it would be a good look for the Middies to look towards the East.
